Reflection : Desktop Publishing

Under Multimedia in Education topic, I learn about Desktop Publishing

From Assignment 6a, I learn how to do a brochure using Microsoft Publisher. It is very easy and fun to use. It does not require much skills, it only needs the creativity. I think it is really helpful to the teacher especially in doing brochure for any program in school.

A part from that, we also use bookfold function in Microsoft Word. I used the content in Assignment 1 (Mobile Learning) to come out with a booklet.

All in all, I think this topic really helps me in the future before I be a teacher one day. InsyaAllah.

Reflection : Multimedia in Education

Microsoft Paint is an application to draw picture on computer. SO, you don't have to use pencil and paper anymore to draw anything that you like.

You can also use Paint to work with pictures, such as .jpg, .gif, or .bmp files. You can paste a Paint picture into another document you've created, or use it as your desktop background.

In "Paint" there are many types or drawing input. We can choose many types of brushes that available.

You will be provided with a white canvas and you can draw anything that you like!

As one who loves drawing, I found that Paint is very useful for me to fill my pastime when I got nothing to do.

Reflection Week 9 : Multimedia in Education.

Bitmaps

A bitmap image is a computer file used to store a picture. It consists of tiny blocks called pixels.

The first graphic shows vector image, while the second one shows vector image.

Vectors

Programs like Flash draw using vectors. A very simple vector drawing might look like the first picture of the "A" Graphic.

In a vector drawing, you create control points. The lines in a vector drawing are created by the software and join up the control points that the user has drawn.

A vector drawing is also can be used in Google Draw.

This is the example of using Google Draw (Vector).

This is the example of Vector Drawing usage.

This is the example of Vector Based Drawing using Open Source Software.

According to Wikipedia :

Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based on mathematical expressions, to represent images in computer graphics. "Vector", in this context, implies more than a straight line.

In the next post, I will brief a little bit about what I have learnt about GIMP software. Till then.

Reflection Week 7-8 : Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS)

Today I learn about SPSS. At first I really have no idea on what SPSS is.
After I learn it, I have a little clue on what SPSS is

According to wikipedia,

SPSS is a computer program used for survey authoring and deployment (IBM SPSS Data Collection), data mining (IBM SPSS Modeler), text analytics, statistical analysis, and collaboration and deployment (batch and automated scoring services).

So, SPSS is used for data collection. As for teachers, they need to use SPSS to manage the students record like examination results and all that. With that, everything will be easier. The teachers can see the report on students achievement by extracting the information provided.

The is also frequencies on students achievement and the standard deviation. So basically, SPSS helps the teachers statistically.

As more me, I am using the SPSS for managing the data that I got from the Online Questionnaire.

It helps me to see the result of the questionnaire. We learn a lot from the SPSS learning and I hope I can apply the skills in my future.

Reflection Week 5 - 6 : Online Questionnaire (Survey Monkey)

Activity : Mini Research

From my point of view, I found a few things about the online questionnaire. To make it simpler and more understandable, I will divide it into several groups according to WH groups.

What is online questionnaire?
Online questionnaire is a platform to collect information from every internet user. The questions are quite simple so that average user can answer it.

Where to create online survey?
Using internet, we can use many online software. Most of them are free and user-friendly. The users can easily create it even though it is their first time using it.

How to start an online survey?
Before starting an online survey, you have to use any Online Survey that available online. As for me, I will use the free of charge software as it is affordable foe me as student. As for us, we use Survey Monkey as our medium to conduct a survey. Here are the few steps to start an online questionnaire :

  1. Sign-up an Account at Survey Monkey.
  2. Click Create Online Questionnaire.
  3. Choose "Add Question"
  4. Put information both in question box and answer box.
  5. After finish, click "Save".

So these are the new things that I have learnt so far. It is quite easy, but I haven't heard about online survey before. Trust me, it is very easy. Do have a try.

Reflection Week 5 - 6 : Plagiarism.

Activity : THINK, PAIR, SHARE

The next one is about Plagiarism. It s just a short information. But I personally think that the website is very useful, the usage of words is understandable. As a blogger, it reminds me not to plagiarize other's work. It is like stealing.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is defined by the Honor Council document as "the act of passing off as one's own the ideas or writings of another." In the Appendix to the Honor Council pamphlet called "Acknowledging the Work of Others" (which is used by permission of Cornell University), three simple conventions are presented for when you must provide a reference:

3 Things That You Need to Know :

1. If you use someone else's ideas, you should cite the source.
2. If the way in which you are using the source is unclear, make it clear.
3. If you received specific help from someone in writing the paper, acknowledge it.

Reflection Week 5 - 6 : Literature Review.

Activity : THINK, PAIR, SHARE.

Another thing that we discovered is about Literature Review. It is like a new thing for me. During my Foundation year, I have not done anything on so-called "Literature Review". To be frank, I really have no idea about Literature Review. After I came to UKM and went through this Computer in Education course, I got some ideas on what is Literature Review.

What is Literature Review?

According to WIKIPEDIA, A literature review is a body of text that aims to review the critical points of current knowledge including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. Literature reviews are secondary sources, and as such, do not report any new or original experimental work.

Simai Haji Mati was quoted saying that literature review should be referred to as reviewing and analyzing the work of literature in relation to the specified topic in research.

Most often associated with academic-oriented literature, such as a thesis, a literature review usually precedes a research proposal and results section. Its ultimate goal is to bring the reader up to date with current literature on a topic and forms the basis for another goal, such as future research that may be needed in the area.

A well-structured literature review is characterized by a logical flow of ideas; current and relevant references with consistent, appropriate referencing style; proper use of terminology; and an unbiased and comprehensive view of the previous research on the topic.

In a nutshell, I think Literature Review is like "works" done by previous authors about the particular topics. So, it is like a reference to us if we are doing any research on something. SO now, I already have an idea on what Literature Review is.

Yasmin Khairani Zakaria.

Reflection Week 5 - 6 : Computer in Educational Research.

Activity : THINK, PAIR, SHARE

This week, we have learnt about Educational Research Process. As for me, I found it is interesting. In my class, we have to find a website that talked about Educational Research Process. THIS is the website that I chose.

The article that I chose was written by NASIR BABA in 2008. It was a good writing by the way. I personally adore his writing. In the article, I found a few important things such as :

The Meaning of Educational Research.
  • Part of the things we have learnt so far is that researches generally address problems.According to Gay (1981) the major difference between educational research and other research types is the nature of the phenomena they study.
  • Ali (1990, p.22) also defines it as “a systematic attempt to define and investigatesignificant problems involved in teaching and learning in and outside the school andat various school systems”.

The Categories of Educational Problem.
  • Psychological: e.g. learning theories, factors affecting learning, remembering andforgetting, motivation, maturation, child development and growth, etc.
  • Philosophical: e.g. logical analysis of concepts, values, and worthiness in education, educational aims, moral judgements, methods of reasoning, meaning, nature andsources of knowledge, etc.
  • Evaluation: continuous assessment, tests instruments, examinations (both internal andexternal), item analysis, students’ report cards, etc.
  • Content: the school subjects, factors affecting choice of content, mode of organisingcontent, etc.
  • Methodological: methods of teaching, a comparison of these methods, teaching styles, teacher effectiveness, teaching practice, micro-teaching, instructional media, etc.
  • Administrative: school financing, discipline, school records, classroom management, leadership styles, recruitment and deployment of staff, etc.g.Sociological: e.g. school-community relationship, teacher-pupil relationship, interpersonal relations within the school, classroom behaviour of students, students’unrest, cultism, etc.
  • Historical: e.g. history of institutions, programmes, places or persons of educationalinterest

The Importance of Educational Research.

  • Research equips teacher trainees with problem-solving and leadership skills;
  • Students’ participation in research can provide very useful baseline data that can beused for planning purposes;
  • Research provides the students with marketable skills;
  • Research enhances the continuous professional growth of teachers.
  • Research may develop in the students the scientific attitudes of objectivity, curiosityand critical outlook;
  • Research also leads to improvement in teaching and learning situations

Reflection Week 3-4 : E-Learning & Mobile Learning.

Activity : THINK, PAIR, SHARE
Use : WH Techniques.

Below is our summary on e-Learning and Mobile Learning. As for me, I found it is very easy and can be used by many people. Not to forget, it is very useful in our education institution too.

Title:
ASSIGNMENT 1
E-LEARNING AND MOBILE LEARNING

What is E-Learning and Mobile Learning?
E-Learning :
The delivery of a learning, training or education program by electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material. (Derek Stockley 2003)
Mobile Learning :
Any activity that allows individuals to be more productive when consuming, interacting with, or creating information, mediated through a compact digital portable device that the individual carries on a regular basis, has reliable connectivity, and fits in a pocket or purse.
It is using handheld devices for learning, training and Job aid. The Mobile Learning enables users, students, trainees, teachers and Instructors to use their hand held devices as Pocket PCs and Mobile Phones for self learning , development and training.
Any sort of learning that happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies

How E-Learning and Mobile Learning work?
They are working when people can learn anywhere and usually at any time, as long as we have a properly configured computer. Cell phones allow you to communicate any time and usually anywhere, as long as you have a properly configured phone.
Besides, they works in or outside of the class. For example, a student can still read the books without bringing the books home. But, with the devices like the CD Rom for the e-learning, they can get into the information just by a click on the laptop.
Besides the laptop, mp3, ipod, and any other digital devices are considered as the mobile learning devices. They are very handy and they can be brought by the students anywhere, anytime. Plus, there is internet connection, guided e-learning can be done by the students. For example, when the students have problems with some questions in the previous class, they can simply IM-ing their teachers for further explanation. There is no need for them to go to the school and meet the teachers at the office.

Why we need to use E-Learning and Mobile Learning?
Basically, technology prepares students for the future. The world has changed. The borders are disappeared. We can no longer stick into our country. We need to go through to the global environment.
  • Learners can interact with each other and with the practitioner instead of hiding behind large monitors.
  • It's much easier to accommodate several mobile devices in a classroom than several desktop computers.
  • PDAs or tablets holding notes and e-books are lighter and less bulky than bags full of files, paper and textbooks, or even laptops.
  • Handwriting with the stylus pen is more intuitive than using keyboard and mouse.
  • It's possible to share assignments and work collaboratively; learners and practitioners can e-mail, cut, copy and paste text, pass the device around a group, or 'beam'? the work to each other using the infrared function of a PDA or a wireless network such as Bluetooth.
  • Mobile devices can be used anywhere, anytime, including at home, on the train, in hotels - this is invaluable for work-based training.
  • These devices engage learners - young people who may have lost interest in education - like mobile phones, gadgets and games devices such as Nintendo DS or Playstation Portable.
  • This technology may contribute to combating the digital divide, as this equipment (for example PDAs) is generally cheaper than desktop computers

Where are mobile learning and e-learning were usually implemented?

Schools

Students in school monopolize the most in the number of user. Mobile learning was widely used in school as most students find it easier to do some revision using portable mobile devices.

Students can use their iPods to download relevant educational material through online along with audio and video lectures.

Higher Education

Higher education students especially those who are in universities have the high demand in implementing the e-learning and mobile learning.

Using their laptops or tablet PCs, the tudents can download audio and video lectures and podcasts; create and edit course-related assignments; surf the Web; send e-mails, IMs, and text-messages; and log on to the course Web site at home or while on the road. The units provide a high level of interactivity for global collaboration, scientific experimentation, and research.

Workplace Learning

In the public sector, it will continue to be the national health services,
the defense departments and public including local government authorities. In this sector, apart from internal education and training for employees, there is likely to be more focus on training through e-learning to external partners and customers.

Consumer market -

The consumer e-learning segment will consist of Internet and CD-ROM based edutainment products primarily for children and young people and in the long term, also mobile, location independent edutainment to handheld devices. It will also include standard and individualized language learning products for the same media, and educational products that allow parents to supplement their children’s education with online or CD-ROM based learning opportunities.

Who usually used e-learning and mobile learning?

Children and young people are using their own mobile devices – Pods, iPads, netbooks, laptops, and smart phones – to be consumers and producers of digital content, and to be active participants in online communities. They are doing so as part of their day-to-day lives outside of school as leisure time activities. They are familiar and comfortable with social networking and using a variety of apps via their devices.

In general, there are three types of groups who frequently involves in e-learning and mobile learning. There are informed consumers, creative producers and active participants.

Informed Consumers. Learners are consuming real time and constant news with Google, Twitter, Facebook, and other newsfeeds via their mobile devices. In more formal learning environments, learners can be given the agency to access this information and provided with the skills to make informed and critical decisions as to its relevance, efficacy, and credibility.

Creative Producers. Young people are taking pictures and creating video using their mobile devices. Pulling out mobile devices during real world photo-ops is commonplace. Although many young people have the desire to produce media that is creative, attention-grabbing, and has high production value, many lack the knowledge and where-with-all to do so. When this desire to produce media enters into a mobile learning environment, the education setting can provide a combination the right instruction; and apps for planning, filming and editing. Learners-as-producers not only increases the potential for creative and higher quality media, but also additional avenues for them to develop and showcase their content-related learnings.

Active Participants. Mobile technologies have provided digital access to many who do not have access via computers and in-home Internet. This includes lower SES individuals from developed countries as well as those in third world countries. This anytime, anywhere, and with almost anyone capability makes mobile learning ripe for collaborating globally and developing global stewardship. It levels the educational landscape permitting communication and collaboration between diverse groups of learners.

Reflection Week 2 : C/LMS (Learning Management System).

Assalamualaikum WBT.

For this week, we need to  one more assignment. The activity is THINK, PAIR, and SHARE. I have did some research and reflection about THINK, PAIR, SHARE. You can CLICK HERE to have a glance about what is THINK, PAIR, SHARE.

From the mine research that I have made, what I can conclude about C/LMS is, it is basically more or less about e-learning. It is very helpful to those who are in education field actually.

What is C/LMS?
LMS is an interactive system made to ease the education management system. It is applied by most of the students. For example, in UKM we use SPIN system. It is very helpful to the students as it helps them to get the information faster. Most importantly, when it comes to last minute cancellation about lecture or lecture notes download.

Who uses C/LMS?
Like what I said before, C/LMS is very useful to the students or those who are in education field. The students uses C/LMS to get the information about the lectures, tutorials and the lecturers too. Besides that, C/LMS helps the students to get the lecture notes faster. For example, the students can download the notes before the lecture starts and can do some revision. When they came to the lectures, the learning becomes easier and simpler.

Where C/LMS was used?
Usually, the C/LMS was used in many educational institutions. Public higher institutions for example, use it as a medium to connect the students with the lecturers. A part from that, the daily schools are also using this system.

Why C/LMS was used?
For the very important reason, C/LMS is very fast, easy and helpful. The C/LMS was very easy to use, as the students just need to have their own unique password to get through the system. It is very user-friendly as it does not require any complicated features.

Besides, the usage of C/LMS is very helpful to the students and lecturers. It can save the lecturers' time to do photocopy of the notes or the tutorial questions. A part from that, it is very convenient to the students because the can use the C/LMS wherever they go at any time.

How C/LMS works?
A students should have their own password to access to the system After the log on to the account, they can have the view of the system. They can choose whether to download the questions, note or assignments. They can also do some online quizzes.

In UKM, we use SMP web to administrate students records. Besides that, the SMP web is also used for course registration and students data record. The students can also register their examinataion through SMP web.

Meanwhile, the SPIN web is used for connection between the students and the lecturers. Any announcement about lectures or classes, they students will know it from the SPIN web. At the same time, the students can also download lecture notes and tutorial question through SPIN web.

The Advantages of C/LMS.
Basically, it has four main advantages, which are :
  1. Centralizing Learning Environment.
  2. Easier tracking and reporting for enhanced performance.
  3. Immediate Evaluation Abilities.
  4. Regulatory and Legal Compliance

However, to make it simpler, the C/LMS makes out management task becomes easier. We do not have to submit the data one by one. With C/LMS the students data and records are available online and it makes the administrators' job easier. The students also can save their time to do revisions.

The open source software lists for C/LMS.
  • Docebo In use in corporate and higher education settings. Offers support for a number of different learning models and is compatible with SCORM 1.2 and 2004. It offers interfaces to external systems such as video conferencing and HR systems.

  • eFront The base install is quite minimalist, but this is easily extended with modules available from the site. Commercial versions with additional features are also available.

  • Dokeos A very well featured LMS that also offers content authoring and video conferencing tools. Supports converting Office documents into Learning Paths. Offers user synchronisation with HR management systems such as Oracle and SAP.

  • Claroline Aimed more at the educational than corporate arena, this system is based around specific pedagogical principles (as is Moodle). Supports SCORM content as well as a built in Wiki and other online content tools.

  • ATutor Actually an LCMS, ATutor also offers tools for the management of learning. The “A” stands for Accessible and it has excellent support for key accessibility standards as well as support for SCORM, IMS etc.

  • ILIAS Provides testing and assessment tools as well as collaboration tools such as chat and forums, and distribution technologies like RSS and podcasts.

  • OLAT A well featured system in its tenth year of development. Recently the winner of the “IMS Learning Impact ‘Leadership Award’ 2009 for best open source learning platform”.

  • Sakai Aimed at Universities, this project has a clear roadmap and has seem considerable development in the last few years. Backed by the Sakai Foundation which manages relationships with educational and commercial supporters.

  • .LRN Originally developed at MIT, .LRN claims to be the most widely adopted enterprise class open source LMS solution.

  • openelms Marketed specifically as a business solution, and claims a diverse customer base that ranges from Merrill Lynch to Queens Park Rangers football club.

  • Ganesha This LMS developed by Anema, has been around since 2001 and is in use in several large organisations. The site, and the LMS itself, are in French but it can be translated.

Finally Completed!

Assalamualaikum WBT.

Greatest praise and gratitude to Allah SWT for giving me this chance to finish my assignment. Alhamdulillah, I was meant to collaborate with my coolest friend ever, Adira. To be frank, this is our first "baby" together. This is the first assignment that we do together. Even though we came from the same UiTM, I was still haven't got any chance to cooperate with her. Fortunately, this is the first one and I really hope to cooperate with her again. She is such a very determine girl and I really adore her spirit and enthusiasm in finishing our project.

I was almost gave in, but at last she tries to confine me that we can finish the project together. Thank you Adira. You helped me a lot and I really owe you endless favor.

To be frank, our first Computer in Education is slightly tough and challenging for me. When I was in UiTM Kuantan and taking Introduction to Computer I think, the task was also quite hard. I was also in the same situation which I got myself stuck in the middle of finishing the task. The history repeated again where I felt so frustrated when I could not do my very best at first. Alhamdulillah, I have made it by the way. I really hope this would turn out to be the sweetest repay for us.

Reflection : THINK, PAIR, SHARE.

Assalamualaikum.

It has been three weeks since I first register here. So it means, I have learnt Computer in Education for 3 weeks. How time flies so fast. Okay, first thing first. What is the newest and most important thing that I have learnt so far. It was about THINK, PAIR, SHARE. It is definitely such a new thing for me who never got exposed with these kind of things.

Basically, what I understand THINK, PAIR and SHARE is a cooperative learning which requires students (me) individual participation. This process undergoes three steps :

  1. THINK is where we need to think creatively about the question that had been given. We got to search about Open Source Software.
  2. PAIR is where we were grouped into pair or triplet. We can exchange ideas and give responses about other's opinion and points. Basically, it was like a discussion.
  3. SHARE is where we need to share it with the whole class. This gives us more confidence to present with our partner. It is very good as the ideas become more concrete and solid through this three steps.
In my opinion, this strategy helps to improve my communication skills. It helps me to give more confidence to talk and communicate among my classmates during discussion session. At the same time, it enhances our understanding about the topic as we undergo many stages before start presenting.

I really hope I can apply this strategy to other subjects too. That's all I think. Thank you.

Reflection : Database

Assalamualaikum wbt.

Today we are learning about "database". AT the beginning, I really have no idea what database is. How ever, after we were told by our lecturer in our class, we eventually got a crystal clear view on what is "database".  So,

DATABASE  is an organized collection of data for one or more purposes, usually in digital form.

If we have created a database, we do not have to use the traditional method in managing the information. We only need the server to access the record. SO, there is no more SHELVES for recorded data!

We need to key in the "tables" for the arrangement of information.
For example, if we want to separate the column of  "Student's Name" and "Student's ID Number", then we have to put it in separate tables.
We can add the record (student's name) in "Datasheet View" mode.

The ribbon above shows the selection of "Adding Table" and etc.

So, database is very useful for a teacher to manage the student's information. As a student from Faculty of Education, it gives me a lot of advantages in order for me to use the method when i started teaching.

A part from that, I find that database is something fun to do. Maybe it gives a bit headache, but actually it
boost your focus of finding information. We will become more alert about the latest information.

Introduction.

Assalamu'alaikum WBT.

First and foremost, alhamdulillah all praise is due to Allah for giving me this golden opportunity to be one of the UKM-ians. It has been almost a month since I first got myself registered here. Time flies so fast. I still haven't got the chance to get myself used with this new environment. I hope, sooner or later I will get used to it. InsyaAllah.

To be precise, this is the second blog of mine. For sure, I will take a good care of it as what I did to my other blogs. This blog was created purposely for my Computer in Education subject as it is one of the assignments that we need to complete.

This picture was taken during the registration day. I looked so happy, but who knows what I feel right?

At the beginning, I was acknowledged by the senior that this subject will be taught in Malay. However, it was a bit surprising when we went to our first meeting and it was conducted in English. So far, I can get myself used to the new technology terms that I have never known before.

From this course, I expected myself to get accustomed with the new technology world. InsyaAllah, I will not let myself left behind this rapid development of technology. I hope, one day when I finished my study and start to teach I will have an adequate technology skills to make sure that my teaching methodology is interesting.

First Week Class.

Assalamualaikum WBT.

Alhamdulillah, I have gone through the first day in UKM. So far, everything went well. What I can say, UKM for me was such a bless. I should be grateful of what I have now.

Yesterday (12 September 2011) was supposed to be my first Computer in Education class  However, there a bit problem regarding to the schedule and we, the TESL students could not have the chance to attend our first class in the first week. However, I did a bit research on the internet and I found it was helpful.

In this Computer in Education class, I expected a lot of IT knowledge will be learned for me. I came from a rural area school which is lack of IT opportunities. I really hope that, when I get through this course for this semester, I will have an adequate knowledge in technology.

As a new generations, I am aware that IT literacy is very crucial. Most of the things was based on technology. For example, in UKM we use technology to make things become smoother especially in administration field.

So, I really hope that one day when I had graduated from UKM, I will become an intellectual graduate whether in my study field or technology. For sure, I really hope to become a teacher with adequate IT knowledge.
